Heiges field house was one of the reasons I chose Ship. It was recently built when I enrolled for the 1974 fall semester. For 3 years my friends and I bowled in leagues in the “basement” of the field house. On the weekends we would play basketball in the field house in both organized and unorganized games. Of course, there were the home basketball games at Heiges. In the mid to late 70’s we had some good teams and the field house would be full of students for both Tuesdays and Saturday night must see games. Then there were the occasional concerts and other events. I remember seeing America and Stephen Stills there. Then of course there was the time Leonard Nimoy came in to speak and of course, gave the famous Vulcan salute. I think Heiges field house has aged well and still is an impressive structure on campus.
